Echoes of Greatness: Art, Music, & Plutarch (Charlotte Mason Inspired)

This is an enrichment class designed to cultivate beauty, wisdom, and noble character through the gentle, living methods of Charlotte Mason education. While not a graded high school credit course, it beautifully complements academic studies by fostering habits of attention, appreciation, and thoughtful reflection—skills that enrich every area of learning and life.

Prerequisites & Readiness
Students should be willing to narrate the stories (telling back in their own words) and to engage attentively. This class suits motivated middle and high school students who are eager to build meaningful relationships with great art, music, and heroic lives.

Success here depends on students who are:
Prepared to listen carefully, observe closely, and narrate thoughtfully each week
Committed to regular participation and respectful focus during sessions
Ready to approach the material with curiosity and patience
Students who invest consistent attention and effort often discover profound joy, deeper cultural literacy, and lasting inspiration from these timeless masters.

Course Highlights
Inspired directly by Charlotte Mason’s philosophy, this class weaves together three enriching strands to nourish the mind, heart, and imagination:
Picture/Artist Study (Art Appreciation): Each term focuses on one great artist. We explore 6–8 of their masterpieces (one introduced per 1–2 weeks). Students quietly observe high-quality reproductions in detail, build familiarity through display and repeated looking, then narrate what they see and feel. The goal is to form a personal, loving acquaintance with the artist’s style and vision—no art expertise required from anyone!

Composer Study (Music Appreciation): Each term centers on one renowned composer. Students immerse in 4–6 key works through repeated, attentive listening (played in class and encouraged at home). We discuss the composer’s life briefly, notice recurring themes and style, and share what the music evokes. The aim is to recognize and delight in the composer’s “voice” so that great music becomes a familiar friend.

Plutarch’s Lives (Character & Citizenship Study): We read one inspiring biography from Plutarch each term (using a student-friendly translation like Anne White’s study guides or similar editions). Lessons involve reading aloud, narrating key events and character insights, gentle discussion of virtues/vices “in the wild,” and occasional mapping of historical settings. Plutarch’s vivid stories of Greek and Roman heroes build moral imagination and understanding of human nature.

Classes are interactive yet contemplative—short, focused sessions emphasize direct encounter with the “living books” of art, music, and biography. Expect narration (oral or written), thoughtful sharing, occasional light copywork or sketching from memory, and time for quiet reflection. The pace is steady but unhurried, allowing ideas to take root deeply.

Assessments & Expectations:
Weekly preparation (preview listening/reading as assigned)
Active narration and participation in every session
Occasional short written narrations or reflections
No formal tests—growth is measured in growing attentiveness, richer vocabulary of appreciation, and emerging personal insights

Materials Needed:
Notebook or binder for narrations, sketches, and notes
Recommended Plutarch translation/edition (provided or suggested each term)
Pen, pencil, and optional colored pencils for memory sketching
