Frontier History
A choose your own adventure experience covering homesteading life in the late 1800’s thru the early 1900’s.
The homestead act of 1862 gave new opportunity for many people if they could prove up on their homestead.
Welcome to the frontier! Race against other students to pick the best homestead!
Design your own farm or ranch. Source reliable water, plan a kitchen garden, get your crops in, choose your animals, find out how well you did!
How will you spend your money from your first year? Will you invest it in enlarging your homestead? Save it for the future? Or will you spend most of it at our general store?
This is a very hands on class! We will also study skills used and culture from the time. We will make recipes, listen to music, play with toys, learn how to store food for winter, learn the benefits and construction technics of various types of frontier houses, watch demonstrations from historians online, make a pot holder, etc.
We will use excerpts from books such as Little House on the Prairie and Race for the Prairie!
We will briefly discuss the people who lived on this land before it was opened up and what happened to them as well.
We also hope to go on a field trip to a historic village. We will learn about what people faced on the frontier in America through history and skills they needed.
No Homework.
